Background

I developed and wrote a feature article highlighting emerging research on carbon cycling in tropical mangrove estuaries. The story focused on Ph.D. candidate Claris Sunjo's work in Cameroon’s Wouri Estuary and translated complex environmental science into an accessible narrative for public, academic-adjacent, and policy-aware audiences.

Mangrove estuaries play a critical role in the global carbon cycle by storing, processing, and transporting carbon through coastal ecosystems. Despite their importance for climate regulation, fisheries, and biodiversity, tropical mangrove estuaries remain significantly underrepresented in scientific literature compared to temperate systems.

Assignment

This story emerged from an ongoing editorial planning process designed to identify and develop research stories throughout the academic year. As part of a structured content calendar, I regularly met researchers, attended department events, monitored emerging projects, and maintained a pipeline of potential story opportunities aligned with departmental priorities.

During a community event, I met Ph.D. candidate Claris Sunjo and identified her work as a strong editorial opportunity due to its focus on climate science and an underrepresented geographic region. Rather than publish a preliminary profile, I maintained contact throughout the progression of her research and waited until significant findings emerged before developing the feature.

The article was written for policy-aware readers, academic-adjacent audiences, prospective researchers, and members of the general public interested in climate science and global environmental issues.

Editorial decisions

I focused on the intersection of scientific discovery, environmental stewardship, and community impact. To make carbon cycling accessible, I connected local estuarine processes to the broader global carbon budget, helping readers understand how findings from a single ecosystem can influence climate models, environmental policy, and ecosystem management.

The story emphasized:

  • The importance of expanding research beyond traditionally studied regions
